One of my most used utilities is my text editor. I use mine
for everything from programming to making quick desktop notes.
There are so many great freeware and shareware text editors
that there is no reason to stay with plain old Windows
Notepad. This week I am going tell you about my favorite
freeware text editor.
There a lots of full featured freeware text editors but the
problem with features is that they make a program load slower.
A good compromise and my favorite freeware text editor is
EditPad Classic 3.53 by Jan
Goyvaerts of JGsoft.
Well, it is not completely freeware. EditPad is Postcard ware
which means if you like the program Mr. Goyvaerts asks that
you mail him a postcard.
EditPad has three features I really like...
..... EditPad loads as fast as Windows Notepad ...really!
..... You can change the screen colors…mine is blue with
white text which I find easier on my eyes.
..... EditPad uses Tabs so you can have many documents
loaded and easily switch between them.
Edit pad offers a full array of icon buttons that will
quickly perform functions such as inserting the date, bringing
up the find box and even changing the font. One button that
isn't there and I would really like to see is a
< stay on top > icon. You can enable stay on top in the
options menu but there is no icon button to quickly toggle this feature on and off.
EditPad also has a lot of features in menus such as a
convert menu that allows you to convert all tabs in the text
to spaces without affecting the text's layout . You can change
the case to all caps, title case or lowercase. There is a
large selection of date and time inserts to pick from and
directly off the file menu is a < reopen > selection
that offers a large number of previously opened files.
You can replace Windows Notepad just by renaming
EditPad.exe to Notepad.exe and putting it in your windows
directory. You probably want to move Windows Notepad to a
storage directory in case you want to use it again. Any thing
that is associated with Notepad will now open with EditPad. I
have often thought that a spell checker would make EditPad
perfect but then I realized loading this into memory would
slow it down just enough to annoy me when I want to quickly
load a desktop note. EditPad comes with a very nice and easy
to use html manual.
There is however one thing I don't like … the default green
icon. I wish you had a choice of say, navy blue but I guess
for the price of a post card I really can't complain!
